In 2016, all cigarette packages were required to have a generic plain brown package with graphic health warnings covering 65% of the front and back. Each year, around 78,000 people in the country die from smoking-related illnesses, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. And this has led to the implementation of various measures to discourage smoking, such as high taxes, public smoking bans, and restrictions on where tobacco products can be sold.
But no matter how many regulations and warnings are put in place, there will always be those who choose to smoke. And as a smoker, I can say that it’s not just about the nicotine addiction. There’s also a certain social aspect to smoking, whether it’s taking a break with colleagues at work or bonding with fellow smokers outside a bar. It’s a part of our daily routine and a comfort in stressful situations.
Of course, there’s also the issue of cost. With cigarettes in the UK being heavily taxed, it can be an expensive habit for the average smoker. But for those of us who are addicted, the cost is just a small price to pay for the temporary relief and pleasure that smoking brings.
As I’ve mentioned, I have been a smoker for over a decade, and it’s not something that I’m particularly proud of. I am aware of the health risks and have tried to quit several times, but to no avail.
